How to Plant & Grow:

• Site Preparation: Napa Cabbage is a heavy feeder! Pick a sunny location with deep, loose, and incredibly fertile soil. Work 4 inches (10 cm) of rich aged compost into the top 8 inches of the soil to support large, tight heads.
  
• Sowing: This is a strict cool-weather crop. Do not plant in spring for a summer harvest (heat will cause it to bolt and fail).For the best results, direct sow or transplant outdoors in midsummer for a magnificent fall crop.Plant seeds ¼ to ½ inch (0.6 - 1.2 cm) deep. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination (5-10 days).

Spacing:

• For Large, Full-Sized Heads: Thin to 12 to 14 inches (30-35 cm) apart in rows spaced 18 to 24 inches (45-60 cm) apart.
• Square Foot Gardening (SFG): Plant 1 plant per 1-square-foot area.
• Watering: Deep and consistent watering is essential. Provide about 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm) of water per week. Crucial Tip: Fluctuating moisture levels (drought followed by heavy rain) will cause the tight heads to split open.
• Harvesting: Check the heads for firmness. When they feel dense, heavy, and solid to the squeeze (usually 60-70 days after transplanting), they are ready. Use a sharp knife to cut the thick stalk just beneath the lowest leaves.
• Gardener's Tip: To prevent the heads from splitting in rainy weather, once the heads reach full size, grab the stalk near the soil line and twist it sharply to break some of the roots. This stops the plant from taking up excess water and splitting.
