How to Plant & Grow:

Site Preparation: These plants are heavy feeders and need a long growing season! Pick a location with full sun. Work 4 to 6 inches of rich, aged compost into the top 10 inches of soil to build a strong, tall stalk.
Sowing: Count backward from your first fall frost. Start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before transplanting OR direct sow into prepared beds. Plant seeds ½ inch (1.2 cm) deep and keep soil consistently moist.

Spacing:

For Thick, Tall Stalks: Space seedlings 18 to 24 inches (45-60 cm) apart in rows spaced 24 to 36 inches (60-90 cm) apart.

Watering & Support: Deep, regular watering (1.5 inches per week) is critical. Important: As shown in our photos, these tall stalks become heavy as the sprouts grow. Drive a sturdy wooden stake next to each plant and gently tie the stalk to it using soft garden twine to prevent it from blowing over in winter winds.
