Growth Habit: Upright, leafy stalk. Produces a single, massive, tight central crown of dark green florets, followed by smaller lateral side-shoots after the main harvest.
Soil Preference: Deep, loose, fertile, moisture-retentive loam heavily amended with organic matter. pH 6.0 – 7.5.
Temperature Preference: Cool weather. Best performance at 55°F - 70°F (12°C - 21°C). Will bolt if temps consistently exceed 80°F.

How to Plant & Grow:

Site Preparation: Broccoli is a heavy feeder! Choose a sunny spot with deep, loose, and incredibly fertile soil. Work 4 inches (10 cm) of aged compost or well-rotted manure into the top 8 inches of soil to ensure rapid growth and large heads.
Sowing: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring (4-6 weeks before the last frost) or in mid-summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds ½ inch (1.2 cm) deep and cover with fine soil. Keep the seedbed consistently moist until germination (5-10 days).

Spacing:

For Large Main Heads: Space seedlings 18 to 24 inches (45-60 cm) apart in rows spaced 24 to 36 inches (60-90 cm) apart. They need lots of room to grow big!
Square Foot Gardening: Plant 1 plant per 1-square-foot area. Do not overcrowd.
Watering: Deep, consistent watering is critical! Give them at least 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5-4 cm) of water per week. Fluctuating moisture will cause "hollow stem" or loose, bitter heads.
Harvesting:
Main Crown: Wait until the central head is tight, dark green, and 6-8 inches in diameter (like Fig 3). The tiny buds should be packed tight and not showing yellow flowers.

Use a sharp knife to cut the thick stalk about 5-6 inches (12-15 cm) below the head. This leaves the lower stalk and leaves intact.
Side Shoots: After cutting the main head, the plant will push out smaller side shoots (florets). Keep harvesting these for 2-3 more weeks!
Gardener's Tip: Broccoli is a magnet for cabbage worms (green caterpillars). If you don't want to use pesticides, cover your young plants with a floating row cover (garden mesh). Inspect leaves regularly and hand-pick pests.
