How to Plant & Grow:

Site Preparation: Broccoli is a heavy feeder! Choose a sunny spot with deep, loose, fertile soil. Work 3-4 inches of aged compost into the top 6-8 inches of soil to support rapid, tender growth.
Sowing: Direct sow seeds outdoors as soon as the soil is workable in early spring, or in late summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds ½ inch (1.2 cm) deep and cover lightly with fine soil. Keep the seedbed consistently moist.

Spacing:

For Continuous Side-Shoot Harvest: Space seedlings 12 inches (30 cm) apart in rows spaced 18 inches (45 cm) apart. This closer spacing encourages more branching.
Square Foot Gardening: Plant 1 plant per 1-square-foot area.
Watering: Deep and consistent watering is critical. Provide about 1 to 1.5 inches of water per week. Dry soil will cause the stems to become woody and bitter.
Harvesting: Wait until the central stalk grows to 6-8 inches tall, topped with tight, richly colored florets (as shown in your photos). Use sharp scissors to cut the stalk 2-3 inches (5-8 cm) above the soil line.
Side Shoots: Leave the lower leaves intact. Within 1-2 weeks, the plant will push out smaller side shoots. Continue snipping these shoots as they appear!
