How to Plant & Grow:

Site Preparation: Gai Lan thrives in full sun to partial shade. Prepare a garden bed with deep, loose, and fertile soil. Work 3 inches of aged compost into the top 6-8 inches of soil to ensure rapid growth and thick stems.
Sowing: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring (4-6 weeks before the last frost) or in late summer for a fall crop. Plant seeds ¼ to ½ inch (0.6 - 1.2 cm) deep and cover lightly with fine soil. Keep the bed consistently moist until germination (5-8 days).
For Large Central Heads: Space seedlings 6 to 8 inches (15-20 cm) apart in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
For Continuous Side-Shoot Harvest : Space plants 5 inches (12 cm) apart in rows spaced 12 inches (30 cm) apart.
Square Foot Gardening: Plant 4 plants per 1-square-foot area for dense, multiple shoot harvests.
Watering: Consistent moisture is essential for keeping the stalks tender. Provide about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water per week. Dry soil will cause the stems to become woody and fibrous.

Harvesting:

Main Stem: When the central stalk reaches 8-10 inches tall and the flower buds are tight and green (before they open into white flowers), use a sharp knife or scissors to cut the main stem about 2 inches (5 cm) above the soil line.
Side Shoots: Leave the lower leaves intact. The plant will rapidly produce new shoots from the side nodes. Keep cutting these smaller shoots as they appear for a continuous supply!
Gardener's Tip: Gai Lan is a cool-weather champion. In hot summer weather (above 80°F), it will quickly bolt (open flowers and become slightly bitter). For the sweetest harvest, plant it in early spring or late summer for a fall harvest.
