How to Plant & Grow:

• Site Preparation : Carrots require deep, loose, and rock-free soil. They will fork and twist if they hit stones. Work the soil at least 10–12 inches (25-30 cm) deep, remove all rocks, and mix in 2-3 inches of well-aged compost.
  
• Sowing: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring (2-3 weeks before the last frost) or in late summer for a stunning fall harvest. Plant seeds ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep and cover lightly with fine soil. Keep the seedbed consistently moist until germination (7-14 days). Tip: Mix seeds with a little fine sand for more even spacing.

Spacing:

• For Straight, Plump Roots: Thin seedlings to 2 to 3 inches (5-7 cm) apart in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
• Square Foot Gardening (SFG): Plant 12 to 16 carrots per 1-square-foot area (4 rows x 4 rows, spaced 3 inches apart).
• Watering: Consistent moisture is the secret to sweet carrots! Provide 1 inch of water per week. Fluctuating moisture will cause the roots to split.
• Harvesting: The purple "shoulders" will pop out of the soil when ready (usually 65-70 days). Gently loosen the soil with a garden fork, grasp the base of the foliage, and pull straight up.
• Gardener's Tip: Never boil these carrots! The purple skin is rich in water-soluble anthocyanins. To preserve their breathtaking purple and gold color contrast, enjoy them raw, or lightly roast or steam them. Boiling will cause the purple to bleed out.
