How to Plant & Grow:

Site Preparation: Choose a location with full sun to partial afternoon shade. Lettuce loves rich, loose, fertile, and well-draining soil. Work 3 inches of aged compost into the top 6 inches of soil.
Sowing: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked. For a continuous supply, succession-sow every 2-3 weeks. Plant seeds ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep and cover lightly. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination (5-7 days).

Spacing:

For Full-Sized Rosette Heads: Thin seedlings to 10 to 12 inches (25-30 cm) apart in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
For Continuous Baby Leaf Harvest: Sow seeds densely at 2 to 4 inches (5-10 cm) apart and snip leaves when young.
Square Foot Gardening (SFG): Plant 4 plants per 1-square-foot area.
Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist. Provide about 1 inch of water per week. Consistent moisture is the secret to tender, non-bitter lettuce. Dry soil will cause the leaves to become tough and bitter.
Harvesting: Cut-and-Come-Again: You can gently snap off the outer lower leaves while leaving the inner heart intact. It will regrow new leaves.
Full Head: Wait until the rosette has formed a gentle, soft heart and the head feels solid (usually 50-60 days). Cut the entire head at the base with a sharp knife.
Gardener's Tip: Heat is the enemy of lettuce! When daytime temperatures consistently exceed 80°F, lettuce will "bolt" (send up a flower stalk) and become bitter. Plant it early in spring, or start a second crop in late summer for a superior fall harvest.
