How to Plant & Grow:

Site Preparation : Carrots require deep, loose, and rock-free soil. They will fork, twist, and grow stunted if they hit rocks or hard clods. Work the soil at least 10–12 inches (25-30 cm) deep, remove all stones, and mix in 2-3 inches of well-aged compost.
Sowing: Direct sow seeds outdoors in early spring (2-3 weeks before the last frost) or in late summer for a fantastic fall crop. Plant seeds ¼ inch (0.6 cm) deep and cover lightly with fine soil. Keep the seedbed consistently moist until germination (7-14 days).
Tip: Mix seeds with a little fine sand for more even spacing.

Spacing:

For Straight, Plump Roots: After seedlings emerge and reach 2 inches tall, thin them to 2 to 3 inches (5-7 cm) apart in rows spaced 12 to 18 inches (30-45 cm) apart.
Square Foot Gardening (SFG): Plant 12 to 16 carrots per 1-square-foot area (4 rows x 4 rows, spaced 3 inches apart).
Watering: Consistent moisture is the secret to sweet, glossy carrots! Provide 1 inch of water per week. Fluctuating moisture (dry then wet) will cause the roots to split and crack.
Harvesting: The orange "shoulders" of the carrots will start to peek out of the soil when they are ready (usually 65-70 days). Gently loosen the soil with a garden fork, grasp the base of the foliage, and pull straight up.
Gardener's Tip: To protect your carrots from the dreaded Carrot Fly, interplant them with onions or chives. The strong smell of the alliums repels the pests. Also, keep the soil well-mulched with straw to keep the roots cool and sweet.
