Requerimientos de luz: Pleno sol.

Plan para combatir las heladas: el tomate es un cultivo de clima cálido; incluso una helada leve puede dañar las plantas (entre 28 °F y 32 °F). Proteja las plántulas recién plantadas cubriéndolas con una manta antiheladas.

Problemas comunes: En cuanto a las plagas, tenga cuidado con los gusanos cuernos del tomate (orugas verdes grandes), las babosas, las cochinillas y los roedores. Además, el clima húmedo favorece la aparición de enfermedades fúngicas como el tizón temprano y el tizón tardío. Las plantas pueden dejar de dar frutos cuando las temperaturas descienden por debajo de los 55 ˚F o superan los 90 ˚F. La pudrición apical puede ser un problema, al igual que la deformación de los frutos.

Cosecha: En general, los tomates perfectamente maduros muestran un color intenso, pero aún se sienten firmes cuando se los aprieta suavemente. Busque la variedad específica para obtener más detalles. Los tomates continúan madurando después de ser cosechados. Sujete y gire suavemente hasta que el tomate se separe del tallo, o use un par de tijeras. Corte los tallos cerca de los frutos.

Almacenamiento: guarde los tomates cosechados a temperatura ambiente en el interior o en un lugar sombreado en el exterior. Nunca refrigere los tomates, ya que las temperaturas inferiores a 55 °F hacen que los compuestos de sabor se descompongan. Los tomates se conservarán durante más tiempo si deja los tallos y los sombreros en su lugar hasta que esté listo para comerlos. Para obtener el máximo sabor y nutrición, úselos dentro de una semana, aunque el tiempo de conservación depende de qué tan madura esté la fruta cuando la recoja.
